Remarks

Item details
Remarks:
  • Bronze.
  • The 'eyebrows' on the front of the helmet are set quite high up and (apart from the top and bottom ridges) there is a third, medial, ridge.
  • There is a broad 'reeded' decoration fitted just above the front of the brow.
  • The rear neck guard projects downward at a very sharp angle (at least 45 degrees). A bronze carrying handle is fixed near to the bottom edge. There are three raised 'steps' on the neck guard. The two nearest the helmet bowl are of 'normal' shape, but the third one projects away from the bowl rather than turning in to join the first step where the neck guard joins the helmet bowl.
  • The rear of the helmet bowl carries three raised ribs. At the sides of the helmet bowl there are plume holders, fashioned from bronze sheet material.
  • Although the crest holder has not survived, the solder marks can still be seen. There are also two rivets, centrally placed, in the front and the rear, which would have been anchor points for the crest, when fitted.
  • The brow protection has been lost, apart from the flattened ends, which are still riveted in position at the side of the helmet.
  • Weight: 0.858 Kg.
  • Photos, courtesy of 'Legio VI'.
