Remarks

Item details
Remarks:
  • Bronze.
  • A well-formed hemispherical skull with a very deep back that almost reaches the shoulders.
  • There are applied bronze ear guards with broad flanges. The brow plate is brought to a central point on the lower rim. Reeded borders are applied to these plates
  • The low crest runs from just forward of the centre of the crown to a short distance above the neck flange, where it is secured with a large cone-headed rivet at each end.
  • The neck guard is bound at the edge with a bronze rim and there was a carrying handle.
  • The ear guards originally also probably had an edging of wide brass plate. Although now corroded away, the ear guards almost certainly extended back into the ear recesses on the skull.
  • Schönberger prefers the later date for this helmet. He suggested that it could have come from a trooper in the "ala Damascenorum", although this unit is not mentioned in 'Ala2'.
