Remarks

Item details
Remarks:
  1. The bowl is hemispherical in form, made of iron.
  2. The brim of the helmet has two engraved lines running around it and it is separated from the helmet bowl by a ridge.
  3. Two large rivets are placed either side of the helmet bowl for the attachment of the hinge plates for the cheek guards.
  4. The cheek guards themselves have two cut-outs in front, for the mouth and the eyes. At the base of each guard is a ring, which would have allowed a leather strap to pass through to hold the helmet in place.
  5. It is thought likely that the large helmets of this type would have been lined with a cap made of leather or some material.
