Remarks:
  1. The helmet was restored at Nancy in 1977. There are five different designed of punched decoration on this example.
  2. There are six gilded copper outer ribs (base W, 104-106mm; ½h W, 18-19mm; L, 185-193mm; Th., 1.1-1.7mm). There are 14 rivets for each rib, six on each side and two at the base. Decoration is by means of triangular shapes along the rib edges, formed from double lineds of punched dots. These triangles are filled with semicircles or 'hooks'. The 'foot' of the rib is decorated with a square shape, formed from a double line of single dots and within which is further punched lines.
  3. There are six pointed iron oval side plates (W, 75-83mm; L:, 183-195mm; Th., not determined). These are plated with a gilded copper layer (thickness, unknown). The overlap with the side ribs is about 10mm. The decoration is similar to that of the side ribs.
  4. The brow band (Th., 0.7-0.8mm) is made of iron with a gilded copper layer (Th., 0.05mm). This last is decorated with a complex repoussée design involving a winding scroll from which bunches of grapes depend. There are also crosses and other, smaller, figures.
  5. The crest finial is made of gilded copper (Dm., 47mm).
  6. The cheekguards are made of iron, with a gilded copper outer layer (right: L, 119mm; W, 90mm. Th. Cu layer, 0.3mm/left: L, 118mm; W, 86mm. Th. Cu layer, 0.3mm). The edges are pierced for the laces used to attach the leather lining. The outer gilded copper layer is decorated with imbricated scales formed from punched semicircular forms.
  7. At the rear of the helmet there is an aventail of iron rings.
