Findspot:
Krivina, Iatrus, Bulgaria (BUL) on the lower Danube. Found in the southern part of the via principalis in Building XXVII, together with various vessels and bronze coins from the reign of Constantinus II (AD 337-361)
Date:
last third of the 4th & first decades of the 5th CAD.
When found, the helmet was in dozens of small pieces, much corroded.
Made of iron, overlaid with a gilt copper sheet.
The helmet bowl is made from two sheets or iron, held together with an external rib. This rib is 48mm wide and rises to a height of 15mm in the centre. The central rib is attached to the two half-shells with round-headed rivets.
The cheek guards are pierced around the rim with small holes for the attachment of a leather lining.
The helmet bowl carries a similar series of holes along the bottom edge.
