Remarks

Item details
Remarks:
  • Bronze, with a well-formed helmet bowl, extending deeply down beneath the ears to a sloping neck guard of slightly convex cross-section. Because of its depth, the occiput extension has five ridges in place of the usual three.
  • At the apex of the skull, there is a domed button on top of a double-stepped base from which four broad strips of bronze descend. Each of these is decorated with a moulded central rib in the centre and at each side. These join the brow-band, the ear guards and the extension of the occiput.
  • The peak reinforcement is of right-angled section and curved in the normal manner.
  • The neck guard is here at its largest form. At the centre is a carrying handle, attached through two hemispherical bosses to an applied tabula ansata with right-angled ornaments at each corner. The lower rim has been bound with a U-sectioned bronze strip, retained by notching the edge with a chisel-ended hammer.
  • All parts of the helmet are ornamented with an applied pearl strip, soldered on. The peak upper surface, front flange of the peak and neck guard ornaments are decorated with figures that are slightly recessed and then outlined with the finest pounced work on a silvered ground.
  • The inscription on the brow front reads: "LEG XXX VLP VIC L SOLLIONI SUPERI"
