It was found 3.3.1961 in the legion camp at Haltern in a small pit, 60m north of the Porta praetoria and 30m west of the mid axis of the via Praetoria. (DEU)
The thickened forehead edge changes into an almost horizontal neck guard, also with a thickened edge. In the middle of the neck guard at the edge of the rear there a rivet to the attachment of a ring to retain the helmet lace.
The cheek hinge plates are secured with 2 rivets each, the cheek guards themselves being lost.
Soldered to the apex of the crown is a conical fitment for the helmet plume.
The brow reinforcing guard is soldered to the front of the helmet and riveted at each side to the helmet bowl.
Although Robinson classified this helmet as a 'Coolus, Type D', it is clearly a 'Coolus, Type E' and has been so classified here. The difference between the two types is mainly in the construction of the brow guard; the Type D has a right-angled form, whereas the Type E has a flat form, as here.
