Found in 1890 during an excavation of the Roman fortress, 2m from the northern gate tower of the Porta principalis sinistra.
The mask is a male face, of which only the right hand side of the face, together with the ear protector survives.
There is a Medusa medallion on the forehead, with wings to (presumably originally) either side. There are curls on the forehead and on the cheeks, coiled snakes. There is also a snake head in front of the ear as well as another between the wings and the eagles.
At the chin, the ear and the base of the neck there are six small holes, used to attach the original leather lining.
