Although somewhat damaged, this rear portion of a helmet is covered with raised designs. The scheme is symmetrical about the centre line of the helmet bowl, which is made from a copper alloy.
In the centre is a medallion, containing a male bust - possibly that of the reigning emperor. This is supported on either side by a winged Victory figure. Above and behind this on either side there is a four-horse chariot ("quadriga"), being driven by a god (possibly Neptune, as he bears a trident). The neck (occipital) area is decorated with shields and 'trophies of arms', while the lower part of the helmet's neck guard has a series of swirling designs.
