Remarks:
  • The helmet bowl is hemispherical.
  • Just above the front of the helmet there is a silvered decorative strip.
  • There are three embossed reinforcing ridges at the rear of the helmet bowl and the sharply sloping neck guard has two embossed steps.
  • There has been some discussion as to whether this helmet is an Imperial Gallic C, rather than a Type F (as is recorded here). The latter should have applied ear guards and for this there should be rivet holes (probably 3) as well as indications of the position of the guard. On the other hand, a Type C does not have an ear guard. One school of thought does recognise the evidence for the guards, while the other is more dubious. For the present, the helmet will remain classified as an IG-F but if close examination can be made, then it may yet be changed to an IG-C, if warrented.
