Remarks

Item details
Remarks:
  • Only the upper part of the iron skull survives, adhering to the bronze casing.
  • The bronze covering consists of four sections: (a) skull cap and neck guard, applied with a plating of white metal or silver, (b) overlapping these, the brow and occiput in yellow bronze, (c) ear guards and a large bronze boss applied over the joins and (d) other large bosses attached, one to the occiputal region and three more to the neck guard. There was also a large circular ornament on the brow (since lost) - possibly another bronze boss.
  • Other decoration consists of double raised lines, punched at intervals of 5mm and applied at the upper edge of the occiput.
  • At each side of the central ornaments of these plates are semi-circles, worked in the same technique.
  • Scriber marks and six neat rivets show where the crest box was attached.
  • The left cheek piece survives, being of bronze with a hollow rim. It has an embossed semi-circle below the hinge and a stylised representation of an ear that is shaped to fit into the ear guard.
  • Photos (c) Mark Martin and Karwansaray BV
