Remarks

Item details
Remarks:
  • This helmet closely resembles that from Mainz, which later was largely destroyed in WW II.
  • The helmet bowl is very deep, with almost vertical sides. The 'eyebrow' decoration is very elegant, with four embossed ridges. The brow-guard protection is missing but there is a hole in the centre of the forehead which would have carried the tang for this. The ear-protectors are also missing, although the rivet holes for these can still be seen.
  • Immediately above the front of the helmet bowl, there is a reeded copper alloy strip, with a raised central spine.
  • Each cheek guard is decorated with four ornate rivet surrounds.
  • The neck guard is almost horizontal, with two embossed steps.
