Can anyone explain to me what the black substance which is used to do repousse-work on is made of? Which ingredients are used and where can I get them? Or is it for sale ready for use?

It is tarr (soort pek in NL). You can buy it in Belgium at Swiss Axe Rijfstraat 11 2018 antwerpen (03/231.24.06).

Gashford

In the UK we call it pitch. derek forrest Pitch mixed with lard and talcum powder till you get the right give.

How does your mix compare to say roofing tar, sawdust and plaster? Is you mix less sticky, firmer etc. ? Do you add equal amounts of lard and talc? I must know!

derek forrest

Sorry did not measure but the less lard the stiffer the mix and the talcum (French chalk) means its not too sticky and from bitter experience do not use the kitchen! or indeed anywhere else as it stinks and gets everywhere.
