The 'Roman World' uses the Google-maps system to display various categories of locations of interest to Roman army enthusiasts.
There are currently five categories:
: reenactment groups
: RAT-members
: sites of ancient battles and Roman legionary and campaign camps
: museums of note
: ancient cities and sites of interest.
The page doesn't load!
- Do you have a modern browser (e.g. IE 6.0 or Firefox)?
- Is Javascript enabled?
- Have some patience! There are hundreds of sites on the map and the browser generates them all when the page starts. That may take some time.
IE says there is a privacy problem
Since the map uses googlemaps, the site needs to contact google to download map items. IE notices that and gets nervous. It's not really a problem.
What about privacy for my data?
If you are a RAT-member and would like to add yourself, go ahead. However, as this system is not very secure, we recommend you do not add in your precise address. City & state will do. If you do want to give other RAT-ers access to those data, add them in your RAT-profile and provide a link to it here. Your RAT-profile is accessible only to other members of Romanarmytalk.
The link should be put in the Miscellaneous field and should look as follows:
<a href="http://www.romanarmy.com/rat/profile.php?mode=viewprofile&u=NN">My profile</a>
NN should be replaced by your user ID, which you can find by clicking your own profile and looking at the number behind u= in the address bar.
How do I add a marker?
- To add a marker to the map make sure you are registered at Romanarmy.com and logged in. Then find 'Submit a map item' or click here.
There are two ways to submit map items. You can type a name, plus address, plus town, plus country; and you can offer coordinates plus country. The first and easiest way is also the most accurate.
You can check the spelling of the place name on the map that the system provides. The town all the world knows as Pompeii is known in Italy as Pompei.
However, things can go wrong when a small town is not well-known. E.g., Holland has two towns called Valkenburg, and the software invariably uses the wrong town. In those situations, coordinates are better. If you use Google Earth, you can easily find them. In my experience, the format 31.4565 (lat) and 35.3845 (lon) works better than 31 27'23" N and 35 23'04" E.
If you use coordinates, you must add the state. (Please note that the software recognizes West Bank as an independent state.)
Try to be precise. Cologne is a bit vague because the city boasts several museums and archaeological sites, and covers three ancient Roman sites.
Do not use accents in "City/Town:" (in the "Name" is okay). Cádiz and København are not recognizable for the system.
Try to add links to websites. Links have the following format: <a href="http://www.yoursite.etc">name</a>
When you are submitting ancient topographical information, use the Latin name of a town as name of the marker. E.g., Sirmium, not Stremska Mitrovica. Of course, this is not always possible.
Please make several markers to enable specialized searches. People will not find the museum of Cologne when there is only a marker for "an ancient city".
After you have submitted your information, it takes some time before it appears. The site admins must check and activate it.
After this, check it yourself. About 10% of the entrances is not picked up by the system (send a message to
