Legio IIII Italica PDF Print E-mail
XLI. Legio IIII Italica. Col. 1549 Legio IIII Italica is only known from the Notitia Dignitatum Orientalis VII.18( =54) as pseudocomitatensis under the command of the magister militum per orientem. It follows therefore that the legion was originally established as the garrison for a province of the Orient at the latest in Diocletian's reign. It is possible, however, that it was already raised by an emperor of the 3rd century, perhaps Severus Alexander or Gordian III (see also the paragraphs col.1329f and 1337).
