XLIX. Legio V Iovia. Column 1572. Tr. Alexandr Kolouch.
[1572]
The legio V Iovia was created by Diocletian. Together with the VI Herculia it was appointed as the garrison of the province Pannonia Secunda, see paragraph A above, col. 1355. Here it stayed still at the time of Notitia Dignitatum occ XXXII v. 44 "praefectus legionis quintae Ioviae cohorti(um) quinque partis superioris Bononiae" v. 46 "praefectus legionis quintae Ioviae Burgenas" v. 48 "praefectus legionis quintae Ioviae et sextae Herculeae in castello Onagrino". The number of the legion continues the sequence of the four legions of the Pannonian province, which in a certain sense were considered as a one unit. In its permanent camp in Bononia and in the advance castellum Onagrinum, which lay on the left bank of Danube, the legion was responsible for the immediate protection of the important imperial residence in Illyricum – Sirmium. So far, epigraphic remains of the legion are not known, if the epitaph of a "protector ex n(umero) Iov(ianorum)" who died in Aquileia CIL III 10212 - with regard to the site, Sirmium, where it has been found - cannot be related to the border legion.
