LXVI-1. Leg X Veneria. Column 1690. Tr. Jeroen Pelgrom
[1690]
Leg X Veneria appears only in in the inscription CIL V 4191 : C. Lanius C. f(ilius) Ani(ensis) de leg(ione) X Vener(ia) … (see De leg. X gem. 5). The nickname, which was derived from the dynastic mother of the Julian house (=Venus), characterised the old veteran legions from the dictator Caesar. In the period of the (second) triumvirate, perhaps after the battle at Philippi, it was discharged to Cremona - this is proven by the tribus aniensis of the C. Lanius. Another part, simultaneously or little later, was sent to Brixia : M. Mutellius M.f. Fab(ia) leg(ione) X (CIL V 4987).
