LXXXV. Leg. XXX. Column 1821. Tr. Marcus Fichtinger

[1821]
The Caesarian legion of this number was raised soon after the beginning of the Civil War (Bell. Alex. 53, 5). At the time of Caesar’s death it was stationed under the command of Asinius Pollio in Hispania Ulterior (Cicero, Ad fam. X 32, 4), where Q. Cassius Longinus had already commanded it before (Bell. Alex. 54, 2. 57, 1 & 3). There is no doubt that C. Vettius C. f. Ser(gia) centur(io) leg. XXX …, who established the inscription of Urso (CIL II 1405 = 5438), did his military service in this legion, too. It was probably still situated in the same province, when the battle of Actium was fought out: C. Baebius T. f. Clu(stumina) tr(ibunus) mi[l(itum) leg. X]X praef(ectus) ora[e marit(imae) Hi]span(iae) citer[ioris b]ello Actiensi (CIL XI 623), where the legion’s number could be also completed to [XX]X.
We cannot separate this legion from leg. XXX, whose men were stationed in Beneventum after the battle of Actium at the latest or maybe even in the year 712 = 42 BC (CIL IX p. 136 f. nr. 1603. 1605. 1616. 1620. 1629. 2114. 2115. 2167). The Legion was dissolved during Augustus’ reorganisation of the army, we can therefore guess that Aticius T. f. Pol(lia) Mutina (centurio) l(egiones) XXX Classicae (CIL X 18) also belonged to the period of the Triumvirate – his legion should be identical with the one of the same number from those other inscriptions.
