LXXXIII. leg. XXVIII. Column 1821. Tr. Alexandr Kolouch
[1821] Leg. XXVIII is named only on one inscription found near Philippi: Sex. Volcasio L. f. Vol(tinia) leg(ione) XXVIII domo Pisis (Bull. hell. XLVII 1923, 87). The veteran who was perhaps by the foundation of the colony discharged by the triumvirs (Kornemann above vol. IV p. 530 no. 105), gives the tribus of his new home, but besides he mentions also his birthplace. The inscription shows that the veterans settled in Philippi were taken not only from cohortes praetoriae, as the coins of the town show (see above p. 1241, 33ff), but also from this legion; it proves also that during the fight against Brutus the XXVIIIth legion belonged to the army of triumvirs.
